After a few wild and windy days, spring has arrived in Wanganui.  What a great place to live.

I spent last week refurbishing another unit and I was pleasantly surprised whilst stopping for an infrequent cup of coffee to hear native Bell Birds And Tui’s in the Balgownie Reserve next door.

The reserve is about 1.4 kilometers long and has over 4000 native plants and trees.  It is great to see the rewards from the hard work of the Wanganui City Council over the years in developing this area and we have it on our doorstep.

We are now half way through winter and we haven’t had many cold days.

Wanganui has a wonderful climate and apparently is the fourth most temperate in the world.

This is a fund raising event for St Johns Hill school. Tickets are only $25 which is a cheap night out. The event is R18 however.

We currently still have accommodation available if you or your friends need somewhere to stay on that weekend.

February has raced past and summer is nearly over.  Before we know it will will be having winter sports in Wanganui.  We have had some lovely guests this month and I just wanted to share a recent comment card with you.

We are very pleased with the improvements we have made over the past year to the motel and from the feedback from our guests, so are they.

Men’s Ablution Block

The work on upgrade of the ablution blocks is coming along nicely, an the Men’s block is now complete and all spruced up

The work on upgrade of the ablution blocks is coming along nicely, and the Ladie’s block is complete and we are really pleased with them.

An update for our customers that we will be doing some upgrade work on the Ladies Ablution Block and Laundry on Waitangi Day and then Monday the 10th until Wednesday the 12 of February.

Well Christmas is a distant memory and Easter is nearly upon us.  School holidays have finished and it is back to work as usual.

We have had a lot of positive comments over the last few months but I wanted to share the two below with all of you.

We are nearly full this coming week with a Lawn Bowls tournament on in Wanganui, but we still have  a few rooms available  if you need somewhere to stay.

The weather is improving, slightly, and the days are longer.  We are are now moving the lawn frequently and the place is looking great.

Wanganui lost its old analogue TV signal at the end of September which left many people scrambling for a new UHF aerial.  Luckily we had already installed new aerials and new 32″ flat screen Freeview TV’s into our motel units.  These Freeview TV’s are all working perfectly so there is no need to miss out on the latest episode of Shortland Street when you stay with us.

Labour Weekend is just around the corner and we are nearly full, so get in quick if you need a motel room in Wanganui this Labour weekend.

This week has been extremely busy for us here at Bignell Street Motel as we have had two school teams staying with us.

Mahurangi College Boys Hockey 1st 11 played in the Secondary Boys Olympic Stick Competition held at the Gonville Domain, Alma Road, whilst Wanganui and Howick College Girls 1st 11 competed in a Soccer Tournament in Wembley Park.

Both teams had a number of games during the week and achieved good results in the competitions.

These two school groups chose to stay at Bignell Street Motel for a number of reasons including:

• Price – the cost per person was extremely competitive compared to other accommodation providers in Wanganui.
• Location – the Secondary Boys Olympic Stick Competition was held at the Gonville Domain which is 1.3 km away.  That’s only 3 minutes by car or a short 15 minutes walk.
• Free & controlled WiFi – Even though the teachers and parents were away from home, it did not mean that they wanted to be disconnected from their email and essential online communications.  Bignell Street Motel was able to provide the teachers and parents with WiFi access yet restrict the students access so that any spare time on site at the motel was spent doing school work instead of surfing the net and accessing Facebook.
• On site laundry facilities – We issued the sports teams with a key to the onsite laundry so that they could have easy access to the washing machine and dryer as we know know how it is to keep your sports team looking clean and smart.
• Quiet Surroundings – Bignell Street Motel is located at the end of Bignell Street.  Being at the end of the road means we get very little road noise and excessive vehicle traffic. This meant that the teams were able to get a good nights sleep and were not disturbed during the day whilst doing their normal educational activities.
• Parking – Both teams arrived in mini buses.  They were all able to park directly outside their ground floor units which made the transfer of players and their equipment / belongings a breeze.

We really enjoyed having the two well behaved teams staying with us and we hope they come back and stay with us again soon.
